Britain is not known for its Idealist philosophy, with its long tradition of Empiricism (going back to More and Bacon and most known for Locke and Hume) and its well-known Utilitarianism (Bentham, Mill, Sidgwick). In this chapter, I will discuss the British Idealist movement as it relates to other philosophical movements in Britain's history, starting out with the Utopians and following the historical timeline via Hobbes and the Empiricists to the Utilitarians of the British Idealists' own time.
